STREETSCAPE

STREETSCAPE KEY MAP

The map below highlights the location of corridor improvements that are focused on pedestrian safety, connectivity, branding, and increased pedestrian size. In addition to tree planting and new streetscape amenities (benches, bike racks, brick pavers, etc.), the improvements below represent the most visible physical changes along the corridor.

BUMPOUT & PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALKS

The improvements along the corridor will include new bumpouts and branded crosswalks at key intersections. These elements will provide benefits for pedestrians, the business community, and transit riders. The use of bumpouts will maximize the preservation of on-street parking, while also creating new social spaces with unique neighborhood character.

BRANDING

Inspired by architectural treatments and accents from the historic LaSalle Theater, an overarching corridor branding effort will be implemented using decorative crosswalks, gateway placemaking elements, and rigid pole-mounted banners.

AMENITY PALETTE

New amenities will be installed along the project corridor to support business and pedestrian oriented activity. The amenities will be strategically placed with an emphasis on locations where there will be more intense pedestrian activity. By placing new amenities along the corridor that have a coordinated and consistent aesthetic and placement strategy, the corridor will have a clear visual identity and will support the corridor brand.

TREE CANOPY

Trees play an important role in establishing a safe, healthy, and pedestrian friendly corridor. They are also critical to our larger strategic plan to reestablish the urban tree canopy in northeast Ohio communities. While some of the trees along the corridor are unhealthy or problematic due to their placement, an effort is being made to protect and enhance the existing trees along the corridor. Where trees cannot be preserved, new trees will be planted using best practice urban tree planting principles.

STREET TREE PLANTERS

New trees will be planted in large rectangular tree pits and existing tree pits will be expanded. Larger tree pits are important because they provide trees with increased access to soil volume and provide larger surface space to avoid many of the issues that result from root heaving.

STANDARD USE AREAS

The majority of tree pits along the corridor will have a finished surface of fine decomposed granite aggregate. This is lightly compacted loose material that allows for flexibility as the trees (and roots) grow. The decomposed granite is also considered to be an accessible surface, if properly finished.

SPECIAL USE AREAS

At select locations along the corridor, the tree planters will be planted with an understory of perennials and shrubs. These locations will align with intersections receiving bumpouts and decorative crosswalks.

BUS STOPS LOCATIONS & ADJUSTMENTS

As part of the project, the location of the corridor bus stops were evaluated. There are several bus stops that are being recommended to shift to the nearest intersection. The proposed adjustments will allow safer ADA accessible boarding environments while minimizing impacts to on-street parking.
